Most people know what viruses are (or at least that they're bad). And anyone with an e-mail account has run across Spam. Too many people don't know about e-mail scamming, called phishing, where someone tricks you into giving them your account name and password.

The sad part is that with just a few tips, you can avoid most of the problems you will see in your e-mail. If you see something here that helps you, share this with a friend!

Viruses

Viruses can destroy your files and cause all kinds of havoc. Protecting yourself involves having an anti-virus, but that's not always enough. Make sure you are using secure e-mail practices to help prevent viruses from infecting your computer.

[+] Turn off html and scripting in your e-mails

You shouldn't be able to get a virus from just previewing or opening an e-mail, but you can.

[+] Never Open Attachments

The number one way to get a virus is from an e-mail attachment.

Spam

Ah… the Internet equivalent to junk mail. Tons of worthless advertisements for products you don't need and don't want. Best of all, you get the privilege of cleaning up the mess that they sent you. Use my advice to not only help you to stop getting Spam, but to stop helping to spread Spam.

[+] Turn off images in your e-mails

Letting a Spammer load an image through e-mail helps them get paid and lets them know to Spam you again.

[+] Never put multiple recipients in the 'To:' field when sending an e-mail.

Don't violate the privacy of people in your contact list by sharing their e-mail addresses with everyone

[+] Delete in-body e-mail headers before forwarding e-mails.

Chain letters gather e-mail addresses the further they go. Delete them before your forward!

[+] Keep your e-mail address off web pages unless it's obfuscated.

This has been shown to be the most effective way to prevent Spam

[+] NEVER respond to a Spam e-mail or buy anything from them

Don't encourage the act of spamming by allowing them any attention or money.

Phishing

Phishing is an extension of an old scam where someone would call you pretending to be from your bank or the hospital and try to scare you into giving them information. Ex. "Mrs. So-and-so, I'm Bill from the bank. Your account has been emptied and we're concerned that it wasn't actually you who did it. We can replace the funds, but we'll need to verify your identity. Please tell me your name, address, phone number, social security number, mother's maiden name, blood type, the time and duration of your last period (etc. etc.).

In this case, you'll get an e-mail that looks very authentic (because hackers can write e-mails just as well as the banks can). It will warn you of something bad and lead you to their website which won't be the real site, but it will look like it.

If you make the mistake of entering your name and password, the hackers will have access to your bank account.

[+] Always be suspicious of e-mails from banks or financial services.

There's nothing a theif wants more than direct access to your money

[+] Watch out for sites that take advantage of misspells

Sometimes it's obvious you're on the wrong site, but sometimes it's not.
