Home » My Web Portfolio
For the most part, I wrote this page to serve as kind of a scrapbook of all the pages I've written over the years. However, it does show my web design skills so feel free to look around and see some of the work I've done.
Graphic Work
Besides having done most of the graphics work and style on every site I've built, I've done some graphic design work that I'm proud of. The following work is included because it can't be seen just by browsing the web pages.
Verizon Wireless - Spring 2007
|
A friend who works for Verizon Wireless asked if I could create a logo for their "Battle of the Bands" that their store was hosting. He described a basic idea of what it was for and some thoughts of how he might want it to look.
I stared at the Verizon logo and thought it looked a little like a guy playing a guitar so I went with that. I think it turned out pretty well and he and the store manager agree. The best part is that I managed to keep it to three colors which will greatly reduce the cost of having it printed on shirts and signs.

RADICL - Spring 2005
|
RADICL stands for Reconfigurable Attack/Defend Instructional Computing Lab. The University of Idaho got a grant to develop one of these labs and I offered to create the lab's poster. I was very pleased with the way it turned out.

"Web Designer's World" self-promotion graphic - Spring 2004
|
When I created the Actor's Oasis site, I put my own information on there as well. Since I'm not an actor with great professional headshots, I made a picture of myself doing what I do: web design.

Professional sites
Here are some of the web sites I've designed for businesses and organizations over the years. They are listed in reverse chronological order.
Gatti & Gatti Law Firm - August 2006
|
Gatti and Gatti law firm in Salem Oregon had a problem. Their site was nice, but had errors and poor search engine visibility.
I hesitated to take on the job myself because I could see that they were using ASP (which I hadn't ever coded in), but I gave them some free advice for fixing the most obvious problems. And just like that I was hired.
Fortunately, most of the ASP was just for creating a page template and mail form so I was able to pick it up very quickly. Most of the actual work I did was on the page's stylesheets. The page now looks better, works better, and is far more visible to search engines (from less than 400th in Google to somewhere in the 60's so far). I converted their site to PHP so I could host a copy here (which you can access by clicking the image on the left), but their live site is HERE.

NIAPP - April to May 2005
|
The National Institute of Advanced Transportation Technology is a research office at the University of Idaho. They work on hybrid vehicles of various kinds including the triple hybrid SUV that uses gas, electric, and ethonol.
For this site, they wanted a smooth design with simple navigation built into a template that they could use for the rest of their site. Their current site was a bunch of disconnected pages that became more and more outdated as other parts of the site changed.
By using abstraction and a header/footer design for pages, each page shared the same code for navigation making the base design and navigation identical on all pages. To see what the old site looked like, click HERE.

Associated Student Housing - Jan to Mar 2005
|
ASH is a University supported group of family housing residents who took the inititive to spearhead improvement projects in the community and work with the University to set policies affecting families in the housing units. As webmaster and secretary of ASH during the Spring of 2005, I not only built the website, but successfully petitioned the University to make a change to the parking policy that benefitted residents in two buildings.
The webiste was very simple and involved no database. The goal was to create a place where ASH could post meeting minutes, upcoming events, and ASH documents.

NASA - Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) - Jun to Aug 2004
|
JPL is the NASA research lab that designs and builds all spacecraft that leave Earth's orbit. Some of their recent accomplishments include the successful conclusion of the Cassini project (Saturn), the Mars rovers, and the Genesis spacecraft that captured and returned solar particles to Earth for study.
My job for them was to build an informational site for their internal system that would increase awareness of the existence and purpose of my section and its six groups.
The requirements included following internal JPL web standards, using good layout and design to make information transfer fast and efficient, build the code so it could be maintained with as little effort by the regular staff after my internship ended, and include an element of fun and individuality.
Some specific accomplishments include:
- Since most of the data that needed to be posted on the site wasn't in electronic format, I set many meetings and interviews to learn about the groups and their purpose.
- Designed 7 graphic banners for the site and was specially requested to design an additional banner for our new division chief's web site.
- Took over 100 photos of group members to build a visual "contacts" page that uses an LDAP connection to auto-update infomration such as office location and phone numbers.
- Successfully made the page cross-browser compatible with Netscape 4.7, Mozilla, and Internet Explorer.

I.C.E. Cold Productions - Jan to June 2004
|
I.C.E. Cold Productions was a trio with skills in entertainment, acting, and business that thought that there should be a resume posting site focused on people in their field. Their goal was to create a professional looking site that would allow "talent" (people in the entertainment industry) to post all their data and work history allowing casting directors to quickly and easily find who they needed for a position.
This site took a 105 days to build with 700 hours of work (an average of 44 hours a week). I worked with over 300 graphics and 12,000 final lines of code. Some of the notable features are the talent search engine, the self-creating PDF resumes and business cards, the casting call posting system, and the image/audio/video upload section for talent to show off their stuff.
If you are here to see my work and want to have the name and password to get into the site, contact me first.

Western Oregon University - May 2003
|
I was able to get an internship with a resident programmer to help him with stylesheets and page design. He had the back-end code to run timesheets and the pay system, but couldn't make it look good to save his life.
|
Western Oregon University - Oct 2002 to December 2002
|
This was the project page for my senior design class in undergraduate school. It's fairly simple, but I posted it as an example of different graphic and page designs.
|
AJFI Photography - May 2001 to Feb 2002
|
AJFI photography specialized in high-class photos using equipment, technique, and subject to their full advantage. They are based in the Portland, Oregon area, but travel as needed just about anywhere.
This site is near and dear to my heart as it was so much fun to create. In the 3/4 year that I built it, I learned about stylesheets and how to use them for web animation. It was also with this page that I really began to improve my skills from just basic to more advanced and efficient graphic design and animated GIFs. I was quite fortunate that the business owner was a personal friend and allowed me plenty of time to learn as I went.
Most of the page design and graphics are fairly basic with the exception of the "forest path" graphic on the main page. That was actually done on commission by my mother (who is more talented in art than I am). She took the idea of a "magical forest path" (as requested by the business owner) and couldn't decide which way to go so she created two or three different designs. I noticed that they looked like different times of the day and asked her to make a few more to complete the set.
I took the four resulting designs and made animations for each. Now if you visit the site in the morning, you'll see an early morning shower. During the day, there's a butterfly on the navigation menu and a frog on a lily pad who'll eat the gnats flying over the creek when you click on him. The afternoon's graphic is a rapidly moving "pixie" (just a round blob, but it was the best I could do at the time). Night (everyone's favorite by far) is when the fireflies come out.
The last thing to note about this page is that I implemented a full photo ordering system using only HTML, JavaScript, and Cookies.
|
The Computer Exorcists LLC - Sept 2001
|
Not complicated and not too fantastic, but it was just a simple page for my business at the time. The only thing of any note is the rather cool business logo I created from a photo of me and my business partner.
|
Studio K Photography - April 2001
|
Studio K is a small photogrpahy studio in Salem Oregon. Their previous site was done by a local web designer, but the effort was wasted due to poor presentation (link HERE). My job was to use the same data, but build a design that looked more professional.
|
Wild Things Cards, Comic, & Games - March 1999
|
My very first attempt at building a web page for money. Barter actually, but it was well worth it. I made a simple page that used a wrapping background and replicated the business's card in graphics and information. Additionally, the store owner could post data about available products using simple text pages. For that I received store credit and figured it was a pretty good trade.
|
Personal sites
Many of the sites I've created are for personal use. Hacking away at these early pages is part of how I got the experience to code the stuff I do now. Listed in reverse chronological order:
Remember When - November to December 2006
|
I wrote this page as a culmination of a multi-year project that I could never find enough time or money to complete as I originally intended. Its current manifestation is my attempt to finally put this project out of my mind and call it complete.
While originally, my goal was to create music CDs that people could buy, I realize this is much better. I provide my custom playlists which people can change as much as they want by blocking songs they hate and reorganizing to suite their tastes, and then they can download only the music they want. Better yet, if they download music through my links, I'll get paid for it. It works swimmingly.

City of Heroes @ JeremyDuffy.com - Feb to May 2006
|
City of Heroes is a massive multi-player online game (MMO) similar to Everquest or Star Wars Galaxies except that the theme is superheroes. My Dad introduced me to the game by letting build a character on his account. I had a great time running around saving citizens from petty criminals (I never got high enough level to achieve anything really great) and eventually opened my own account that I play off and on one or two months a year.
After my first month of play on my own account, I wrote a fairly extensive guide of how to play as a "casual gamer" (what I call people like me who don't keep the accounts active all the time). Since I recently finished my second and third months in the game, my experience has increased and I decided to expand the guide into a set of guides with photos and build samples.
This site was used as a test for jeremyduffy.com. I used as much code/style abstraction as possible and self-writing code by matching file names to database keys in order to make addition of new articles fast and efficient. The focus of this site (as with jeremyduffy.com) is content.
I recently started a webcomic which is the first thing you'll see when you enter this site, but the links to the articles about the game are still there at the bottom

Duffy's Gift Registry - 2002 to 2005
|
This page has been through several major revisions to make it what it is today. I don't remember if it started as my idea or if someone in the family suggested it, but it's a place to post reminders to yourself and others of what gifts would be good for any given person.
For example, if my brother mentions in passing that he likes such and such, I can add it to the page later that day when I get to an Internet connection.
The newest edition of the page has much improved stylesheets and page control as well as feature that lets people upload an "avatar" picture which makes their profile easier to see and select in a list.
